In a tragic update, USVI Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced the territory has seen its second COVID-19 related death.
A 72-year-old woman died from complications of the Coronavirius on Thursday.
Bryan said she had underlying health conditions, and had contracted the virus through community spread.
The woman had been hospitalized in St. Thomas for some time, but was unable to recover from the virus, according to Bryan.
This marks the second death in the territory.
In the beginning of April, an 85-year-old St. Thomas resident with underlying medical conditions, passed away from COVID-19.
According to the VI Department of Health, he unknowingly came into contact with a person who had a confirmed case of COVID-19, after traveling to the island from Anguilla. He was not hospitalized at the time of his death and died at home.
As of Friday afternoon, the Virgin Islands has reported 51 positive cases of Coronavirus, 46 of those individuals have fully recovered and 34 tests are pending.
