WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House returned to Washington after their five-week recess and they already have a big task ahead of them: approving a short-term funding measure to prevent another government shutdown.
Funding is set to expire by the end of September and lawmakers want to avoid a government shutdown ahead of the November elections. The stopgap spending measure was approved by the Senate before they went on their recess. The bill funds the government at current levels with some language changes. For example, the measure includes language that would ensure no money could be transferred to the Border Patrol and it also includes language that would temporarily block political appointees from canceling federal funds. For the House to quickly pass the measure, it would need two-thirds majority support.
