DELTA AND MARQUETTE COUNTIES, MICHIGAN – Less than two weeks until the November 5th elections and it’s all hands-on deck for the Democratic and Republican county parties. They’re trying to rally support and get people to vote on Election Day.
Putting together info sheets, making phone calls, creating yard signs and canvassing. The Delta and Marquette counties Democratic and Republican parties are hard at work.
“It’s our job to get people excited for the candidates,” said Bonnie Hakkola, chair of the Delta County Republicans.
Their goal is to rally support for the candidates in their party and get people to vote.
“Right now I’m pounding on doors and meeting and greeting when I can,” said Dave Anthony, a volunteer with the Delta County Democratic Party.
And are pulling out all the stops to grab people’s attention.
“Engaging with radio spots and daily press with ads going out, so any way we can reach our voters,” said Hakkola. “We had a ballot guide that was in Saturday’s paper so we are doing everything we can to engage voters.”
“Putting up billboards with our name on them and sending cards and post cards and doing radio ads and a whole variety of things,” said Fran Majestic, Chair of the Delta County Democratic Party. “I think we have a lot of people engaged now.”
“We’ve been fortunate to have a series of speakers come in to help conduct rallies,” said Tony Tollefson, Chair of the Marquette County Democratic Party. “We’re gonna have Gwen Walz the first lady of Minnesota come here on Friday.”
The two counties vote very differently. In 2020, nearly two-thirds of Delta County voters supported Donald Trump. In Marquette County, 55 percent of voters supported Joe Biden. In this election between Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Trump, it could be a close race.
“We are calling our friends and family and seeing if they’re voting and encourage them to vote,” said Hakkola.
“Just get out there and vote and do our civic duty,” said Rich Clark, volunteer with the Delta County Democratic Party.
