U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS— The Bureau of Motor (BMV) is excited to announce a new online vehicle registration system, which is set to launch on January 31, 2020.
Previously, registration required a trip to the BMV office which required long wait time. Residents can now “skip the line and renew online” with this new system, which benefits all vehicle owners, said BMV Director Barbara Jackson-McIntosh.
Vehicles that are 6 years old or less do not require a physical inspection and can completely renew their vehicles online. Vehicles between 6 to 10 years old are inspected every two years. Meanwhile, residents with vehicles older than 10 years must visit the BMV every year, get their vehicles inspected, and complete the renewal process online.
Online registration is fast and easy:
• First, register at BMV.vi.gov
• Then, access your account to make a payment. Choose whether you want your receipt printed or emailed for your records.
• All final registration documents and sticker will be sent through the mail. The BMV anticipates an overwhelming response so we project that it will take 4-6 weeks to get the new registration and sticker in the mail.
• To help streamline the process, insurance agencies must send customers insurance cards to insurance@bmv.vi.gov. In the subject line include the vehicle’s VIN# and the customer’s name
Director Jackson-McIntosh encourages customers to renew early to ensure they receive their renewal in a timely manner. Customers can renew their registration up to 3 months before their registration deadline, she said.
BMV’s “Skip the Line, Renew Online” initiative is one of several identified to improve efficiency and service within the agency. Later this year, additional online services will become available, including applying for driver’s licenses/identification cards, disabled placards, personalized license plate, and moving permits, along with online scheduling for the written and road tests.
